Infighting rocks Tata’s IT giant

The exit of TCS CEO and MD Rajesh Gopinathan has taken the entire IT industry by surprise. Insiders say his abrupt departu re from TCS was simmering for some time, considering his lack of bonhomie with other team leaders. While Gopinathan is a finance man, he became CEO bypassing several leaders who were working to get newbusinesses for decades.

Gopinathan was also considered aloof and was not so friendly with outside stakeholders.

Tata group chairman N Chandrasekharan’s brother has been the Chief Operating Officer of TCS for the last five years and is a major power centre in the company, say insiders.

Due to the lack of an identifiable promoter, the Tata group has several power centres — like wheels within wheels. And as Ratan Tata has not made his own succession at Tata Trusts clear, the infighting is just going to go up.
