Cycling Duo Highlights Woes of Indian Roads

Though we are proud that India can boast of the one of the world’s largest road networks of nearly 7 million km, catering to 70 per cent of freight and 85 per cent of passenger traffic, we are still far behind developed countries in road maintenance. At many places, including national highways, the condition of roads is so bad that travellers’ safety is at risk.

To highlight this negative aspect of the country’s roads, noted film producer-actor Ankit Krishna and immigration consultant Rajesh Kunte recently undertook a Mumbai-to-Delhi ride on bicycles. “We undertook this 1,400 km cycling expedition as part of our ‘better roads’ campaign,” they said.

The duo cycled from Mantralaya, Mumbai to Parliament House, New Delhi via National Highway 48 in a display of courage, endurance and civic commitment. The expedition aimed to raise awareness and advocate for safer, better-maintained roads across the country.

YATRA ROUTE

The route covered during the expedition was: Mumbai — Virar – Palghar – Talasri – Bilad – Vapi – Valsad – Navsari – Surat – Kamrej – Ankleshwar – Bharuch –Vadodara – Anand – Nadiad – Ahmedabad – Gandhinagar – Himatnagar – Shamlaji – Chittor – Udaipur – Nathdwara – Ajmer – Jaipur – Gurugram – Delhi. The duo hoped to bring attention to both the strengths and shortcomings of India’s road infrastructure.

GREAT CAUSE

“The journey was exhausting but immensely satisfying because we were riding for a cause that impacts millions,” said Ankit Krishna. “Better infrastructure is not just a convenience – it’s a necessity for safety and progress.”

The cyclists’ arrival in Delhi on the eve of Independence Day served as a strong reminder that government bodies must take immediate action to address road safety, quality and connectivity issues for the benefit of all citizens.
