Arun Misra

Every Inch a Banker: From hi-flying banker to training newbies

For Arun Misra, the second innings of life has been just as rewarding as his first innings. Then, he was a seasoned banking professional, trainer and thought leader with nearly four decades of distinguished experience in the banking and financial services sector. After superannuating from Bank of Baroda as Deputy General Manager (Head-Control Functions, International Banking Division) in June 2022, he chose to pursue his passion for learning and capability building by dedicating himself to professional training and knowledge dissemination.

During his illustrious banking career, he worked across a wide spectrum of banking functions, including Rural Banking, Credit Cards, Treasury, Forex Dealing, Money Market Operations, Audit & Inspection, Large Corporate Credit, Compliance, Regional Administration and International Banking. Ergo, his exposure to diverse banking domains enabled him to develop a holistic understanding of banking operations, governance, risk management and business growth.

To top it off, Mr Misra possesses rich international banking experience, having served in Hong Kong for nearly four years, while also gaining extensive exposure to banking practices in Singapore and China. He has developed deep expertise in Trade Finance, Foreign Exchange, International Credit, Treasury Operations and Loan Syndication. His professional contributions extended beyond India, including knowledge-sharing initiatives with banking professionals and regulatory stakeholders in Hong Kong and Singapore.

TEACHING TENURE

A passionate educator and knowledge facilitator, Mr Misra has been associated with leading banking and management institutions for over two decades. He has regularly served as guest faculty at premier institutions, including the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM), Pune, National Institute of Banking Studies & Corporate Management (NIBSCOM), Noida, Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF), Mumbai, College of Agricultural Banking (RBI), Pune, Management Development Institute of Bank of India, Navi Mumbai, and FEDAI and FIMMDA.

Academically, he holds a Master’s Degree in Physics and possesses multiple professional qualifications, including CAIIB, MBA, PGDBM and certifications in Trade Finance, Foreign Exchange, AML/KYC, and BCSBI. He is also a certified assessor for Psychometric Testing from the United States. In recognition of his professional accomplishments and contribution to banking education, he has been conferred the prestigious Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (AIIBF).

Since March 2023, Mr Misra has been associated with the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF), Mumbai as Faculty and Joint Director (Training). He is the Institute’s dedicated faculty member for Forex and Treasury Management, and has successfully designed and conducted several Integrated Treasury Management programmes featuring live market and bourse simulation exercises for commercial and cooperative banks.

LEADERSHIP LESSONS

He has also conceptualised and delivered unique leadership development interventions such as the GRACE (Governance, Responsibility, Accountability, Communication & Excellence) and EDGE (Executive Development for Growth & Excellence) programmes, benefiting more than 250 senior executives across multiple batches.

Over the last few years, he has developed and delivered specialised programmes across 19 critical banking domains, including Treasury, Foreign Exchange, Trade Finance, International Banking, Credit Management, Risk Management, Compliance, Audit & Inspection, KYC/AML, SWIFT, MSME Banking, Ethics & Corporate Governance, Customer Service, Vigilance, Branch Management, Training & Development, and Leadership Excellence.

Known for blending practical banking insights with engaging learning methodologies, Mr Misra continues to contribute significantly to the development of banking professionals across India, helping institutions strengthen capability, compliance culture, leadership effectiveness, and operational excellence.

MENTOR TO NOVICES

Driven by a passion for youth development, Mr Misra actively provides free mentoring and counselling to young bankers on personal and professional matters. Through his guidance, many emerging professionals have benefited from his experience, wisdom, and practical approach to career and leadership development, making him a respected mentor within the banking community.
