Engineering a future beyond iron ore: Mono-miner to multi-mineral muscle

A quiet transformation is altering the landscape of Indian mining. National Mineral Development Corporation, officially renamed and shortened to NMDC Limited in 2007, forayed into commercial coal mining in early 2026. This was not just an operational addition for NMDC. In fact, it was a structural shift for India’s largest iron ore miner when it started operations at the Tokisud North coal mine in Jharkhand this January.

For decades, NMDC was inextricably tied to the cyclical fortunes of the domestic steel sector. By venturing aggressively into coal, the public sector miner has de-risked its business by securing the long-term energy resource while fortifying the nation’s critical demand for power.

The strategic timing of this operational launch is profound. India’s peak energy requirements are scaling up rapidly, demanding immense domestic supply buffers to insulate the grid from international price shocks. NMDC’s deployment of advanced greenfield extraction methods at Tokisud North enables the company to secure a captive, long-term energy resource even as it continues to scale up its core iron ore business.

IRON ORE LEADER

To fully appreciate the scope of this evolution, one must look at the immense foundation supporting NMDC’s daily operations. As India’s single largest iron ore producer, the State-owned Navratna enterprise commands an absolute leadership position in the extraction of high-grade metallurgical inputs. The core mining business remains an absolute juggernaut, anchored by heavily mechanised production complexes in the Bailadila sector of Chhattisgarh and the Donimalai region of Karnataka. These facilities are scaling rapidly.

In fact, NMDC recently achieved a phenomenal milestone by clocking a historic 53 million tonnes (mt) of iron ore production in FY26. The long-term vision is even more aggressive, with an internal blueprint targeting an unprecedented capacity threshold of over 100 mt by 2030.

This journey started from modest origins. Established in 1958 as a fully government-owned venture, NMDC began its glorious narrative by diversifying steadily over the decades, and its prominent subsidiary, NMDC Steel (NSL), recently commissioned a state-of-the-art integrated steel plant in Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh, and is currently driving a massive recruitment drive to scale up executive workflows.

Meanwhile, international arms, like Legacy Iron Ore in Australia, are busy scouting for global mineral blocks. This multi-pronged defensive perimeter ensures that NMDC can ride out regional downturns easily. Whether optimising pellet output or securing overseas assets, the miner continues to rewrite the playbook for legacy public sector undertakings (PSUs).

MASSIVE REVENUE

The ultimate proof of NMDC’s operational competence is visible in its financial books. For the financial year ended March 2026 (FY26), NMDC delivered a spectacular performance on a consolidated basis. Total revenue climbed to an impressive Rs 32,070.89 crore, showing a massive leap compared to the Rs 23,905.52 crore recorded in the preceding financial year. This top-line surge translated efficiently down to the bottom line, with consolidated net profit jumping to Rs 7,414.69 crore, up from Rs 6,539.75 crore in FY25.

However, the growth momentum has slackened in the first quarter of the new financial year (Q1FY27). The mining company’s total revenue and net profit for Q1FY27 moderated by 1.47% and 1.96% YoY at Rs 7,142 crore and Rs 2,007 crore respectively. Despite a surge in operational volume, the quarterly growth in topline and bottomline has softened because of shrinking margins and rising operational expenses.

For market participants, barring the Q1 show, NMDC’s operational accomplishments yield incredibly efficient per-share numbers. Based on the consolidated figures, NMDC’s trailing twelve months (TTM) earnings per share (EPS) stands at Rs 8.48 as of March 2026. With the equity trading at around Rs 85 per share, the company features a highly attractive price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of just 10.11x. This low multiplier indicates significant undervaluation compared to global mining peers. Additionally, the company maintains a robust book value per share (BVPS) of Rs 38.70, leading to a reasonable price-to-book (P/B) ratio of roughly 2.2x.

DIVIDEND COMFORT

Investors have a lot to look forward to. The stock offers a reliable dividend yield of nearly 3% to 4%, providing a safe income stream backed by a debt-free balance sheet. Beyond regular payouts, shareholders get to participate in a larger structural growth story. As value unleashes through the newly spun-off steel business and as coal capacities scale up, the company is moving past its old limits. NMDC is no longer just a mining play. It has transformed into an essential asset for anyone betting on India’s massive industrial expansion.

“NMDC remains well positioned for a healthy growth trajectory, supported by its ambitious target of achieving 100 mt of iron ore production by FY30. Furthermore, the company’s expected venture into business diversification through coking and non-coking coal mines, critical minerals and rare earth elements will act as a catalyst for incremental long-term revenue,” note analysts of ICICI Direct.

VISIONARY MOVE

NMDC has successfully broken out of its historic single-commodity mould. By pairing its robust iron ore leadership with agile expansions in coal, global minerals and downstream steel processing, the corporate entity has prepared itself perfectly for the next decade of development. For the modern investor, the message is clear. NMDC continues to dig deep, build wealth and power the nation’s core economy onwards.

Spreadsheet of success: Foray into commercial coal mining, a structural shift. Business de-risked and long-term energy resource secured by the coal venture. A record 53 mt iron ore output clocked in FY26 and a target of 100 mt set for 2030. Asia’s only fully mechanised diamond mining project commissioned in Panna, Madhya Pradesh.
