Meet Anil Bhaskar of Jalandhar (Punjab), a far-sighted and dynamic first-generation entrepreneur who is the architect of the Healthfarm group – a leading national and international player today in body building and sports nutrition that offers nutritional supplements, organic herbs, multi-vitamins, performance clothing and accessories. The group’s flagship company, Divinity Wellness, has emerged as a global name in food supplements, nutraceuticals, Ayurvedic health products and herbal wellness. Besides spreading its message through the length and breadth of India, the company has spread its footprint in Turkey, Libya, Dubai and other UAE countries, the UK, Canada, the US and Malaysia. The Healthfarm brand founded by Bhuvan Bhaskar – an executive director in 2007 — has by now already crossed its first milestone of Rs 100-crore sales. And if the expansion and diversification plans as well as aggressive marketing strategies undertaken by the management headed by Anil Bhaskar chairman and managing director, are any indication, the group’s sales turnover can exceed Rs 250 crore within the next three years and can reach Rs 500 crore within the next five years or so.
The start of the group was extremely modest. Mr Bhaskar was a well-paid senior sales representative of a leading pharmaceutical company. But at one point, the entrepreneurial bug bit him, and he asked himself why he should work lifelong for others, and thought of becoming an industrialist himself instead remaining a salaried marketing executive.
He sounded his wife Rashi about his entrepreneurial dreams. He told her, “I have an intelligent and understanding wife like you. I think I will definitely succeed in this venture, and we will be able to lay a foundation for (our sons) Karan and Bhuvan.” On a note of caution, he pointed out, “I get a fat salary, so I can look after the family. If I start our own business, and we do not earn anything in the beginning, how will we manage our home? Our sons are still studying.”
A supportive Rashi said she did not see any problem, adding that she had some money to look after the family expenses. Thus encouraged by his wife, Anil took the plunge by resigning his well-paid job to start his own business. To start with, the couple set up a group named Trojan, which started a company called Bison Pharma for the manufacture of pharmaceutical and Ayurvedic medicines at Jalandhar (Punjab).
As the business expanded and the couple were joined by their sons Karan and Bhuvan, a new brand, Healthfarm, was created under the banner of the Trojan group in 2012. Subsequently Healthfarm became the main brand of the group
Notes Anil Bhaskar, “Healthfarm mainly deals with sports nutrition supplements, gym clothing, and Ayurvedic medicines consisting of protein powders, multi-vitamins, weight gainers, fat burners, energy drinks and health syrups. Says Karan Bhaskar, “We have forged ahead with no looking back ever since.” Adds Bhuvan Bhaskar, “Our quest for excellence in the field of Ayurvedic medicines and neutraceuticals has been the benchmark for the endeavours that have led to setting up various manufacturing units.”
The group expanded with the setting up of 7 companies — Trojan Pharma, Divine Pharma, Bison Organic, Divinity Healthcare, Bison Pharma, Herbalways Ayurvedic and Neutraherbs. But Mr Anil Bhaskar wanted to step up the group’s growth, and entered into strategic alliances in the UK, Canada and Malaysia, paving the way for the group to penetrate foreign markets. Going a step further, the Healthfarm group had joined hands with Florida (US)-based Raw Nutrition in order to bring the latter’s quality sports supplements to India. Raw Nutrition is owned by Dr Dominic Lacavone, Matheson Janesen and Christropher Bamstead (the latter is a four-time Olympic champion). The company is known for its premium quality, scientifically backed formulas and commitment to innovation. Notes Mr Bhaskar, “Our partnership was annualed after sometime when we started manufacturing quality products on our own.”
According to Mrs. Henna Karan Bhaskar, Chief Finance Officer, a widening product range and the growing popularity of the company’s products resulted in a speedy rise in the company’s financial performance. In fiscal year 2020- 21, the group’s turnover reached Rs 80.83 crore, on which it earned a profit of Rs 5.39 crore. The next year, sales turnover shot up to cross Rs 100 crore, with profit rising to Rs 6.31 crore. In fiscal 2022-23, sales rose to Rs 124.89 crore on which it earned a profit of Rs 7.80 crore. But in fiscal 2024-25, sales declined modestly to Rs 97.58 crore.
In order to streamline the working of the group by avoiding repetition and boosting overall efficiency, the management decided to reduce the number of companies by merging them according to their synergies. As a result, the number of companies in the group was reduced to four, viz., Bison Pharma, Bison Organics, Divine Pharma and Divinity Wellness – the latter being the flagship company of the group.
Prospects for the group going ahead are all the more promising. Divinity Wellness, the flagship company, is setting up a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Jalandhar on a land parcel spread over 5 acres at an initial cost of Rs 100 million. According to Bhuvan Bhaskar, executive director, “The new factory will feature two specialised units: (A) One dedicated to herbal-based products such as cosmetics, liquid orals, capsules and powders.
(B) Another focused on food supplements and nutraceuticals – including sports nutrition vitamins, baby food and overall health products. Adds Bhuvan, “All units are being developed to meet US FDA standards, with exports at the core of the company’s future marketing strategy.” Says Anil Bhaskar, Chairman and Managing Director,
“The cost of the factory, which will be Rs 100 million initially, is expected to go up subsequently to Rs 250 million with the addition of machinery and introduction of newer technologies.”
He notes, “Divinity Wellness takes pride in embarking on a new journey by establishing this new state-of-the-art factory, a significant step which reflects our commitment to expanding our presence and enhancing our manufacturing capabilities. The new manufacturing facility will not only expand the balance sheet of the company and contribute to the local economy, but also create job opportunities for the community in and around Jalandhar.”
Maintains Mrs. Kanika Bhuvan Bhaskar, Officer-in Charge for marketing, “Besides manufacturing our regular products in the new factory, we will take up production of a new Ayurvedic product range. We envision a future where holistic wellbeing is accessible to all. Our goal is to develop innovative solutions rooted in our ancient Ayurvedic wisdom. We strive to expand the product line, offering comprehensive solutions for various health concerns.”
According to Karan Bhaskar, executive director, “Our group also strives to collaborate with healthcare professionals, Ayurvedic practitioners and fitness enthusiasts to create a community dedicated to promoting natural and holistic wellbeing. Being fit today is a vital need of everyone. People can’t cater to the exact nutritional requirements of the body from their regular food due to their busy schedule. That is why supplements are essential for everyone to attain their true fitness goal. This is the reason why the dietary supple ment market is growing rapidly. Our overall ambition is to take fitness to the next level. So we produce the best in food supplements for every adult. We feel proud to provide a broad selection of products entirely dependent upon the needs and goal of the person, that too at attractive rates, which mostly consist of vegetarian, gluten-free and sugar-free products.”
According to Anil Bhaskar, “The two cardinal mantras adopted by the management while producing the dietary supplements and other related products have gone a long way in making the Healthfarm products trustworthy, reliable and attractive for all fitness lovers. These two mantras which are religiously followed by the management are:
(1) The main thrust and focus of the group is new product development by adopting an innovative approach and intensive market-oriented research with its consistent growth in its production and sales. In order to achieve this the management has entered into strategic alliances with leading global manufacturers of dietary supplements in the UK, the US, Canada and Malaysia. This policy has helped the Healthfarm group to expand its footprint not only in various parts of India but also in global markets
(2) The second mantra is ensure that products of the company are of supreme quality. Insists Bhuvan Bhaskar, “Supreme quality is an aim and firm resolve to forge ahead with no looking back. The quest for excellence in the fields of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and Ayurveda has been the benchmark behind all the endeavours of the Healthfarm group. Crafted with care, our dietary supplements and other products are manufactured ensuring that each product meets the highest quality standards. Every batch is tested to guarantee purity, potency and safety. Our commitment goes beyond just producing supplements – we carefully consider individual health needs and tailor our formulas to support various fitness goals and lifestyles. By keeping our manufacturing in-house, we control every step of the process. Healthfarm products are designed with dedication and the finest ingredients in the interest of customers.”
Points out Bhuvan Bhaskar “We plan to expand our presence in the global market by exporting our supplements to the US, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. These developments will pave the way for a bright future for Divinity Wellness, with the potential to fortify growth and expansion in the coming years.”
